Website Prices and the Cost of Web Design

Web design and development costs can vary greatly, and if you are looking for a quotation then here are a few points to bear in mind.

Many companies offer low cost web designs that are based on a standard template. Whilst the price may seem attractive and a template may appear to offer an easy way to get your business online there are drawbacks. Firstly, your website will not be unique to your business and may have been used by several other businesses and secondly you may find that a template based site is very limited and doesn't give you the features or scope for expansion that you may want later on. Thirdly, companies that use this approach are typically providing a bargain-basement product for as little of their effort and as little of their time as possible. Ask yourself if this is the type of company you want to do business (and repeat business) with!

We create unique websites that are specifically catered to your business. Each site is hand coded and we can always add extra features or pages at a later stage if required.

The other thing to consider is whether the price quoted includes site optimisation work. All of our sites come with basic site optimisation included.

Good website design and site marketing takes a lot of time and experience. If you just want cheap website design and you are not too concerned about quality then there are companies that offer cheaper websites than we can. However, although we do need to charge a certain amount for our time, our prices are very competitive and you will get a completely bespoke service and a fully optimised and tested site.

We are a small web design agency and because our overheads are low we can afford to pass on the saving to our clients. We do not charge VAT on our services and there are no hidden costs. The price we quote is the price you pay.

For new web design and development projects we normally ask for just 15% of the total cost prior to the start of the project. The remainder is typically payable on completion or split so that 40% is paid at an agreed halfway point and the final 45% prior to the website publication. We understand that cashflow can be a problem for small businesses so we also offer monthly payment options interest free for clients who host their website with us.

Factors that Affect Website Design Prices and Rates

Copy typing: Having to transcribe large amounts of text from paper documents takes time. You should always try to provide your copy in electronic format. We prefer text to be sent in Word or plain text format. Even text sent directly in an email is fine.

Changing your mind: If we develop your website or part of your website as agreed with you and you subsequently change your mind about what you need, the work done will still have to be paid for. This makes it important that you carefully specify your website before work commences. Be sure to plan your website and know what you want. We can help you with this on request.

Graphic design work: Graphic design is probably the single most time consuming part of developing a website. If your site requires lots of original graphic design work expect to have to pay a little extra for this.

(Note that the cost of a website is not proportionate to the number of pages required. A single page website still requires layout and graphic design).

Single Page website - from £149.

If you just need a basic web presence and you don't have a lot of content then a brochure style website may be for you. We can create a single page website, with some information about what you do and your full contact details, including an email link and/or simple contact form.

3-4 page website - from £349.00

This is a basic website (no interactivity or dynamic features) with three to five pages e.g. home page, about us, products, contact etc. where you provide the required content. If required we can source some images for you at an additional cost.

5-6 page website - from £449.00

7-8 page website - from £549.00

Additional pages - £49.00 each

E-commerce site (online shop) - from £899.00 upwards

Bespoke site with shopping cart setup to take online payments. This includes an administration area that will allow you to input your own stock, change prices, etc. The admin area is accessible online via a user ID and password.

If you require a dedicated SSL certificate (recommended) then there will be an additional cost of £149.00 per year.

Content Management System (CMS) - add £249.00

If you want to update the content on your website yourself then we can add a CMS to your site to allow you to do so. No coding knowledge necessary!

Note: Content management systems (CMS) do require the client to learn how to use the system and they will be responsible for any changes to the site. If the client requires assistance or we need to fix an issue that has occurred due to something the client has done then this will be chargeable at our hourly rate.

Dynamic Websites, Forums, Secure Customer Areas, Business Management Systems, Membership and Subscription Websites, etc. - price on request

We cannot really put an estimated price on websites like these since complex features are often requested that can make the cost of one significantly more than another. As a guide the price is likely to be in excess of £1000.

Website Updates and Modification Rates

If you don't want to update your website yourself after it is live then we can make changes to your site upon request. Our minimum charge is only £15.00 and we charge an hourly rate of £35.00.

Image Gallery / Slideshow - from £100.00

Stock photography from £4.00 per image

We can source suitable stock photos for your site and purchase them on your behalf for use on your website. The price quoted is for web standard, non-premium images, if you require images that are suitable for print then the price is likely to be considerably higher as a higher resolution image will be required.
